Cost per Chat: What It Means, How to Calculate It, and What's a Good Rate

Short answer

Cost per chat is total ad spend divided by the number of messaging conversations started by your ads. Spend THB 3,000 on ads that generate 60 chats, and your cost is THB 50 per chat. There is no universal “good” rate. It depends on your product, price, and profit per order. The most useful comparison is against your own shop's average.

For shops that close sales through chat, likes and reach tell you little about whether ads are profitable. A more useful measure in Ads Manager is how many people started a conversation and how much each conversation cost.

How to calculate cost per chat

The formula is total spend ÷ total messaging conversations started. If you use the same text across several ads, add up the total spend and chats before dividing. Don't average the cost per chat of individual ads, as those with smaller budgets can skew the result.

Where to find it in Ads Manager

In the Ads Manager table, add the columns Messaging conversations started and Cost per messaging conversation started. Meta counts conversations started through ads according to its own rules, so these figures may not match the number of chats your admin sees in the inbox.

What's a good cost per chat?

There is no single benchmark for every shop. A shop selling a THB 200 product and one selling a THB 5,000 service can afford very different costs per chat. Two comparisons are useful:

FAQ

Is cost per chat the same as cost per result?

When an ad uses the Messages objective, the main result is conversations started, so cost per result is usually the same as cost per chat. For other objectives, cost per result measures something different.

Why doesn't the chat count in Ads Manager match my inbox?

Meta only counts conversations started through ads, according to its own rules. Your inbox also includes people who message your shop directly, so the numbers may not match.

My cost per chat keeps rising. What should I do?

Start by identifying which text is driving up your average. If it's an older top performer, your audience may have seen it too many times. Try a fresh version based on your best-performing text.
