How to Test Facebook Ad Copy and Know Whether the Results Are Real or Just Luck
A proper test needs three things: change only the text while keeping everything else the same, use the same audience and ad objective, and wait until each version has enough chats before deciding. Miss any one of these and the difference may just be luck.
Many shops say, “We tested it, and this text works better.” Look closer, though, and the two versions ran at different times, reached different audiences and used different images. You can't tell whether the text made the difference.
Rule 1: Change one thing at a time
To find out which text works better, keep the image or video, audience and budget the same. Change only the text. Even within the text, change one element per round, such as the first line. If you change several things at once, you won't know what caused the improvement.
Rule 2: Keep the audience and objective the same
The same text can perform differently with different audiences. Test within one audience and one ad objective (for shops that sell through chat, the Messages objective). Ads Manager has an A/B test tool that splits people between versions without overlap. Use it if your budget allows.
Rule 3: Wait for enough chats
Early on, Meta is still in the learning phase, so results can fluctuate. Don't decide after the first day or just two chats. We wait until each version has roughly 10 chats before comparing and treat a difference of less than about 10% as no meaningful difference.
What to test first
- The first line. Most people only read the first line before deciding whether to keep scrolling.
- Price or promotion. This can affect both how many chats you get and their quality.
- The invitation to message. For example, tell people what they can ask about.
- Length. Short and long copy work differently for different products.
Once you have a winner
Keep the winning text as your main version, then write a new challenger based on it for the next round. Repeat the process to improve your cost per chat using your own data rather than guesswork.

How much budget do you need for a test?
There's no fixed amount, but you need enough for each version to get roughly 10 chats. If your cost per chat is about THB 50, around THB 500 per version is the minimum starting point for comparison.
How many versions should you test at once?
Two or three per round. Testing more versions spreads your budget too thin, leaving fewer chats per version and making it harder to reach a decision.
Can you use several text options in one ad?
Yes. Meta lets you add multiple text options to a single ad and decides which ones to show. But the system controls delivery rather than splitting the audience evenly for an A/B test. Use this to explore ideas, then confirm the results with a separate test.
